Follow Up–The Hero We Met At Lowes

This is sort of a follow-up post to one I wrote a few weeks ago called A Hero We Met at Lowe’s.

I received a comment from Steve Bell (the hero) down-playing his heroic nature, and denying he’d done anything worthy of recognition.  He also gave me the name of a friend of his who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms.

He insisted that his friend, Sergeant First Class James Thode, is the real American hero and deserves any and all recognition.  It’s hard to argue with his logic.

In the comment he left on my aforementioned blog post, he suggested I look up Thode.  As a result of his request, I conducted a simple on-line search of his name and came up with all kinds of information.

I cried as I read about his life, death and family he’d left behind.  Because he was a Utah Guardsman, they covered his death on KSL.  I remembered watching the story when it aired more than a year a go very vividly.  I was impressed at the man and his service.

I also found this video which I found to be incredibly touching.  If you have a few minutes you really should consider watching it.  It’s an amazing tribute to this fallen soldier. It’s also an incredible example of the way a community can come together to memorialize our fallen military members.

If you can, watch it to the end. Not because anything spectacular happens, just because it’s touching to see.  You’ll be glad you did.

Back Yard Dreams Coming True

It’s been a really transformative time at our house.  It seems like everything breaks down at once.  The bad news is that we’re bleeding money.  The good news…We have a lot of new things. The other good news is that our ability to DIY has increased a lot!

We babysat for one of my brothers a couple weeks ago while they took a couples trip to Vegas.  The kids were great and we actually had a nice time despite the fact that I had six kids.  We did have one casualty.  Our swing set.

Turns out when six kids swing on a four-year-old aluminum swing set bad things happen.

Being as the set was unrepairable to us.  I decided to see if I could get someone to come and pick it up for parts or metal recycling.  After only a few minutes on KSL Classified’s free section I had a taker!  I seriously couldn’t believe someone wanted this wreckage.  But they did.

This cute little family came and deconstructed the set and hauled it away.  The dad is a welder and had no doubt that with a quick weld job that his kids would have a fun swing set to play on.

They also took this scooter which we received as a fun hand-me-down when our neighbors moved.  My kids didn’t think it was fast enough and refused to ride it.  This little cutie boy thought it was the funnest thing that ever happened so we just let him take it too.

Anyway…after several weeks of having nothing in the backyard and nothing fun to play on we started going through swinging withdrawal.  Just then a coupon in the mail came for Lifetime Playsets.   So with that we headed on down to Lifetime to see what they had.  We were impressed.  We were entertained. We purchased.

So we started building this set.  It really wasn’t THAT hard to do (don’t ask Steve that question).  Not that it was easy.  I mentioned before that we’re not that handy.   Steve started on his own recruited help from my brother and and his wife.  (I helped too) We got the apparatus 99 percent built before we reached an impasse.  It was clear something was not quite right and it was clear that we were all too hungry and exhausted to figure it out.  With that sentiment we abandoned the project for a fresh burger from IN-N-OUT.  The next afternoon we invited some awesome neighbors over and after two long hours of pushing and pulling and monkeying around, we finished it!

Swinging in my back yard is my life-long dream.  I thought my dream would come true with our last swing-set only to find after setting it up that the set was really just for kids and little kids at that.  The hard plastic seat could not accommodate all my seated glory.

This set however although it isn’t intended for grown-ups, it can certainly be used by them as Steve is clearly demonstrating. I’m not sure I have ever seen Steve quite like this.  I think he was pretty excited about the finished product.  We all are.

A swing set in the back yard, let the good times swing!  We’re counting this as #19 on the list.  Next time you’re in the neighborhood, stop by.

What do you just love to do in the backyard?  Trampoline? Tether-ball? Playhouse?  Tell…

Went To a Garden Party

Well today is the big Summer Soiree at the Jordan Valley Garden Park!  I could think of no better song to post today than this one.  Plus…and you’ll understand when you watch this video, which YOU MUST WATCH, how fabulous and wonderful the 70’s really were.

This video was filmed the year I was born.  I wish I could remember how fabulous everyone must have looked when I was an infant.  I don’t really remember anything about my life until the 90’s when everyone was covered in big bulky flannel shirts.  Boo.

I remember cruising along in our family station wagon hearing this song play over the radio and seeing my dad tap his thumbs on the steering wheel as he drove along.  I knew this song made my dad happy, so it made me happy too.  It still does.  I rarely ever hear it anymore, but since I’m going to a Garden Party today I had to post it.

I wonder if Johnny B. Good will make an appearance at the Garden Party tonight?  If he does, I bet he’ll be playing the guitar like he’s ringing a bell. I’ll let you know for sure either way.

Why Not Go BIG When It Comes to Fun

I have the coolest friend named Miki. She is seriously the best ever. She’s strong and talented and beautiful, and really, really nice.

She’s been a great supporter of this blog and of me generally. I’m so glad to know her. The other day she pointed me to a blog post she wrote a few years ago about a person she met while on a little get-a-way with her husband in Alaska. She was wanted me to read a particular paragraph about a man she met while at Costco. She said my tagline, “A VOICE For Daily Happiness,” reminded her of this fellow and she thought I might be interested in it for this blog. Which I was.

Below is an excerpt and photo taken directly from her blog:

You better bring a pillow case to carry your candy off if you hit Paul's house.

We went into Costco in Anchorage to pay homage for my Dad, the Costco King. When we walked in this man and his wife were sitting at the food court table with their cart full of M&Ms. Jonathan and I both made comments, we thought were under our breath, but when I passed by him, he grabbed my coat and said, “If you were wondering about all these M&Ms…” He went on to tell me that every trick-or-treater that comes to his house, which is the last house on a dead end lane, gets a huge 3lb. Costco-size bag of M&Ms!! You better believe I asked for his address! He said they spend $400 and they’ve been doing it for years. He had great stories about kids’ reactions to receiving the huge bag of candy. Can you imagine? I, of course, asked to take his picture. He handed me his card, on bright yellow cardstock that said:

Paul Bierman

A Regular Guy Serious about having fun.

We need more people like this in the world.

I couldn’t agree more. I may just have to change my tagline now to something more like his.  Kristin Sokol and regular gal, SERIOUS about having good times. Why not go BIG when it comes to fun? Can you imagine your kid’s reaction if someone heaved an arm full of M&M’s into their trick-or-treat bags?  Too good.  I tried to look Mr. Bierman up to ask him a few questions about his awesome fun tradition, but I was unsuccessful in finding him.  Bummer!

Anyway…thanks for sharing Miki!

Is Your Plate Too Full?

Have you ever been to a BBQ where there were so many scrumptious foods and deserts that your plate looked less like a meal and more like Mount Deliciousness. A mountain you must conquer or die trying?

Get ready for a metaphor for controlling the flow of our lives…

There are so many important tasks that need to be accomplished, things to be done, so many vacancies that need to be filled by someone responsible.

The question is…HOW do we get it all done? And… how do we do a GOOD job at it?

Answer?…Be selective about what you serve yourself.

Take it from me, your picnic plate will eventually break under too much weight. This is also true for your emotional well-being.  And…from my own experience, your emotional plate will break from being piled too high. You just can’t take every opportunity.

Only so many tasks can be performed in a 24-hour period. When we log jam our lives we only end up suffering and sweating the small stuff every minute and feeling like a failure at the end of the day.

Your life doesn’t have to be like this. If your life IS this way, it’s because you are choosing it. Simply make another choice.  Easier said than done.

Keeping our image or egos up is a powerful force compelling us to go, do and accomplish! If we desire peace and happiness in our lives we MUST exercise the self-mastery to control what we put our plates.

If you’re anticipating a major life-change like a marriage, new baby, etc., now is probably NOT the time to fulfill your life’s dream of opening a restaurant, getting your PhD or taking the job offer in Singapore.

I say all of this with some hesitation, because I am certainly on the PRO side of living life, having fun experiences and trying new things on a regular basis. I just don’t like to see these opportunities come at the expense of more basic needs in life.

Make sure everyone (including yourself) is okay and on-board, then go for the adventure!  There is plenty of time to fulfill your life’s dreams. With a little planning and anticipation there are ample opportunities to try every single thing on your life-list.

Be careful not jeopardize your mental health and sanity or that of your spouse or children. No accomplishment is worth this price.

Next time you’re at life’s picnic of opportunities, consider passing on the ambrosia salad or deviled eggs. You’ll probably be invited to another picnic next week. Save something delicious for next time.

How to Improve Your Home Office When You Have No Talent

Don’t laugh. I admit, I’m cluttery and have no taste for decorating. That’s why I needed help.

One thing I know for sure is I’m not a DIY person.  I’m more of a HSE (Hire Someone Else) person.  Hiring someone is not always an option so I’m lucky to have found a middle ground to help with #153 on the list.

Personalized-Interiors is on-line interior design blog created by a friend of mine now specializing in E-Design.  Clients e-mail room photos and give basic information about lifestyle, personality etc.  For a $75 fee you get an experienced interior designer to assist your DIY project. Brilliant!

Here are my before photos.

With only these photos, she created a custom design plan.  Next time, I would send measurements of the room and furniture to ensure a more accurate scale.  I wish my office was as big as it seemed in the design plan.

I absolutely loved the colors and design elements she suggested (selected from information I gave about our preferences and lifestyle). See full design plan here (if you haven’t already).

I loved the suggested layout, but after 3 hours of moving our GINORMOUS office set and unplugging the computer, printer and all the wifi junk, we discovered that our room wasn’t as big as the design plan depicted.  The re-arrangement didn’t work.  So by 1:00 a.m. we moved it all back. Don’t worry, my husband was a good sport. I was the one who fell apart. Hard labor just isn’t my thing.

It was discouraging not doing everything she suggested, but that didn’t stop us from implementing what we COULD do.  With a limited budget, we chose the highest priority items.

So, here’s the after shots.

We bought these darling organizers from IKEA.

They were just the right colors!  I keep all my kids coloring books, magazines, etc., in them. It’s easy access, handy and super cute.

This cute table and fresh looking grass totally hides a massive cable sticking out of the wall. The funky orange lamp also came from IKEA. My designer suggested brightly colored pillows to go on my client chairs.  The ones she suggested were a little $$ and were sold out anyway, so I hit up JoAnne’s for some fabric and recovered some old throw pillows MYSELF!

The rest of the items came from Gordman’s, a new store that recently opened up nearby.  I’d never been there before, but I came out with about $250 worth of décor for my office. I have to say, as a cheapskate, I really feel like our money went a long way in that store.

My other favorite accents are here:

Love these fake books. They’re hollow in the middle.  Sneaky! I hide candy from my kids in there.  We also bought a few little potted silk flowers to spruce up here and there.

This is a working office but is located at the front entryway of my home.  I don’t want my guests (mostly judgmental 5 and 6-year-old kids) to see all my clutter upon entry.  These green and orange baskets do the trick distributing the clutter.

I had all my cameras (I have 3) and their accessories in one big bin. I could never find anything. This cute basket from Gordmans holds everything in it's right place. So HANDY!

I love my new home office. So does Sunny.

Sunny loves to type and wear reading glasses when she looks at the computer. If you ever wonder where children learn thier habits from...

I spend significant time crafting words for this blog here, so its nice to have a space I really like to work. It inspires me, but nothing inspires me like my LMFAO PARTY ROCK glasses (back story here)!

Yes, I do wear my LMFAO Party Rock glasses while I work. They inspire me too. (They also help distract you away from realizing I was getting ready for my morning workout and hadn't yet showered when my six-year-old snapped this photo.)

Personalized-Interiors helped us with guidance to make this DIY project go.  We could not have gotten to this place ourselves.

Nothin’s Gonna Stop Us

Okay…time for another classic musical rewind.  If you haven’t tuned in for one of my Sappy Saturday posts yet, you picked a great day to tune in. I’ve already featured several other SMASH hit’s, but this one…This one really rocks, especially if you liked the movie Mannequin.

Starship’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now is a classic in my mind for several reasons.  A. I actually had this song on my wedding album.  As in we danced to it at my wedding.   2. It was the theme for one of the best 80’s movie of all time (also the very first movie I can remember seeing in a movie theater).  And D. My brother Jason who shares my affinity for what the world views as “terrible taste in music” LOVES singing this song incorrectly.

He’s notorious for singing songs as he hears. This song’s chorus line goes like this… “And if this world runs out of Lovers we’ll still have each other.  Nothing’s gonna stop us now.” Jason sings it this way…”And if this world runs out of LEATHER, we’ll still put shoes together.  Nothing’s gonna stop us now.”  It really sounds better this way.  I think.

I also loved watching this video because it made me realize the the movie Lars and the Real Girl, was just a knock off of Mannequin.

Anyway…enjoy this 80’s classic.  Enjoy the fashions in the video.  Please understand what we will all be forced to look like in a few years if the 80’s fashion trend stays with us.  Get ready to wear poofed up hair ladies.  And gentlemen.

A Hero We Met at Lowes

We’ve been in the midst of making a string of home improvement projects at our house.

Monday’s post mentioned we’re NOT DIY people.  We’re more like HSE (Hire Someone Else) people which is expensive and basically means we don’t get much done around the house.

Anyway…while at Lowes this weekend, we were looking at some doors and being assisted by a very nice Lowes associate named Steve, who had what looked to be a bionic arm.  We figured he’d just had some surgery on his shoulder or elbow or maybe a combination of the two.  Honestly we didn’t think much of it other than to notice the contraption on his arm.

He gave us all kinds of advice, shared his expertise and moved with us through the store as we perused different products for projects happening at home.

We finally ended up at the “Project Desk” where he helped us design and get a bid on a deck.

He mentioned saving our project description under another guy’s name since he wasn’t planning to be around.  We asked where he was going and he mentioned that he was active duty military and was headed out again.  Then I noticed his military haircut and then looked again at his arm.

I didn’t want to be rude, but I HAD to ask about it.

He told us that he’d recently returned from Afghanistan casually explained that his arm had basically been blown apart by an enemy IED.  I was stunned.  I hear all about IED’s on the Today Show, but I never fully connected the danger to real-life people.   People I might meet at Lowes in my own community.

Only because we asked, he told us a little about his recovery and how surgeons had moved the nerve inside his arm which allowed him to recover some sensation in a few of his fingers.

I realized in that moment that we were in the presence of a wounded war hero.  I hate to sound all melodramatic about it, but the man almost had his arm blown off and he was getting ready to ship out AGAIN!

If that’s not a hero…what is? This man, and all our Soldiers and their families are amazing people and deserve to be put on a pedestal.   I know I couldn’t hack it as the wife of a soldier.  I’m too soft.  I could barely hold back my tears over his sacrifice for me, and my family and our freedom until he was five steps away from us.

I cried tears of gratitude for his service as we bought our silly little home improvement items from the checker.  I sobbed all the way out to the car.  Steve and I looked at each other once we were back in the car and asked ourselves what had just happened.  Our casual trip to the hardware store had suddenly transformed into an amazing experience where we realized maybe for the first time what selfless service our military members give us on a daily basis whether we realize it or not.  We’d met a true war hero.

I felt like I should throw him a parade, or give him a medal or at least buy him dinner.  Because we were too stunned by his story the first time around, we ended up going back into the store to properly thank him for his service to our country.  I wanted him to know that we appreciated and noticed his courage and sacrifice.  Of all the stupid things I take and post pictures of, this was one opportunity for a photo I did not want to miss.  A picture with a real-life hero rather than some of the idiots I’ve had photos with in the past.

So here he is, Steve, a Lowes employee, a wounded soldier on the road to recovery, an American Hero.  I hope he finds this post. I’m sure he’ll be embarrassed to read it, but I want him to know that we were touched by this experience and were really grateful to have met an inspirational public servant.  We wish him well in his recovery and wish the best for his family in his absence.

God Bless the USA.

Memorial Day Giveaway!!

Summer is officially on now that Memorial Day has been and gone.  We had a fun weekend.  I hope everyone had a great weekend filled with some FUN or some work projects or some memorializing.  We enjoyed a combination of all three.  Starting with work projects…specifically cleaning and organizing the garage. The installations of the organizational features is a big deal for us because we’re not that handy.  The bikes hang nicely now.

We also installed this handy stop light feature on the wall of the garage.  The Park-Zone now tells me when I have pulled far enough into the garage.  I hope that having this will help me avoid running into stuff which i’ve been doing pretty consistently over the last 7 years.  I’ve hit our big blue cooler at a very slow speed in the garage at list 150 times.  The cooler is still in great shape.  The van’s front bumper on the other hand….Oopsie!  Hopefully this handy device will prevent me from hitting my newly hung bike. So far so good, but wish me luck.

We also did some memorializing.

Plus we went to Lagoon!  It was really fun.  My six-year-old earned a new nickname.  We’re calling her Sister-Dare-Devil!  She was almost tall enough to ride some of the biggest rides in the park.  Luckily the ride attendants aren’t that skilled at picking out shorty kids.

Now for the bonus giveaway…I know that’s why you’re still reading.  If you’ve read my Garden Party post, you already know about the Jordan Valley Conservation Garden Park’s Home and Garden Club Summer Soiree. They’ve given me a pair of tickets to give away.  There up for grabs!  Combined they’re worth $20.  If you’re looking for a fun date, affordable gardening/DIY home projects or just an evening of fun, music and food you might like to attend, especially if you can get a pair of tickets for FREE!

To enter…read my Garden Party post…and leave a comment on THAT post.  If you’d like to leave a comment on this post too, feel free.  Tell me all about your fun Memorial weekend.  But if you want the tickets…Comment on the Garden Party post.

While your at it…if you haven’t already, go ahead and like The Vocal Sokol on facebook. That way, you won’t miss out on all the fun here.  Facebook will remind you to read about all the good times and give-a-ways.

The winner will be announced next Tuesday June 5th.
