Andy Warhol Said It

2013-02-02 15.57.31I’ve been hearing a lot of self-loathing chatter lately about body image and a variety of other things related to whether we are or are not doing things right.

Andy Warhol believe it or don’t had some words of wisdom on this subject.

We went to the BYU Museum of Art last Saturday mainly because we had to do something that day and there was a limited-time Andy Warhol exhibit there.

We saw all the usual things you would expect to see at a good Warhol exhibit. Soup cans, Marilyns, astronauts, etc. One thing I wasn’t expecting was this exhibit.

It was a make shift room with fans mounted pointing in every direction and giant mylar balloons just wanting for someone to push them up into the free-flowing air.

My girls happily participated in this exhibit. While they were playing I noticed this posted on the wall inside the exhibit.Great Andy Warhol sayings

After reading it, I started pushing the balloons up in to the air too.How to have more fun

Life IS too short to spend it worrying about whether or not we are 5 or 15 or 150 pounds overweight or if our arms are too flabby. It’s too short to worry about if the Chevron pattern is in or out. It’s too short to worry about if someone thinks we’re good enough.

If you spend the bulk of the time worrying about how you look or whether you’re doing it right, you’ll miss your chance to push giant mylar balloons up to the ceiling and watch them whirl around. That might not sound like much to you, but we sure found some joy in it.
Next time you find yourself worrying about stuff take Andy Warhol’s advice. It’s good.

Angela’s Miraculous Recovery

Recovery from a brain injury Even though I consider myself a deeply spiritual and religious person, there aren’t very many days when I feel like I could stand in my front yard and praise God all the day long, but today is one of those days.  Today my life-long friend Angela went home from the hospital.

I’ve shared almost my whole life with her from Kindergarten to college roommates.  On Dec. 13, 2012 was in a tragic accident  that took the life of her darling 12-year-old son CJ.

It was one of the most tragic events I can ever remember enduring. If I never see a child in a casket again, that will be too soon.  Even more tragically, his mother missed the whole funeral while she was in a coma for several weeks.

Even though this story can’t end with everything back the way it was and everyone whole again, there is a happy ending.

My darling friend Angela has made nothing short of a miraculous recovery.  Over the last six weeks she went from being in a coma with a brain injury unable to communicate or even regulate any of her bodies functions to going home. TODAY. Supporting someone wiht a brain injury

We all have God to thank for that.  Our long-time friend Mindy Shipley created a facebook page where all her family and friends causal and close could come together to pray and get updated on her condition.

There were a lot of days where the news wasn’t always encouraging.  It was difficult to stand in the hospital ICU next to her husband as the specialists came through and said they’d just have to wait and see.  The uncertainty was almost the worst part. I credit the congregated prayers for getting her and her family through those days.

There were times when I saw her in the hospital and left more than a little discouraged.  In college, I was a home health nurse’s aide who regularly visited people including young mothers involved in tragic accident who never recovered their bodies functionality even years later. Imagine my delight when she woke up from her coma.  It was prayer and the grace of God that allowed this to happen.

At first she could only follow people with her eyes, then she could squeeze hands, then she started Brain injury recoverypointing and using expression on her face.  Then…they took out her trach and she could speak and she seemed to know who everybody was.  That was a miracle too.

Her husband Ben who had major back surgery just 3 days before her accident was there by her side despite his own physical and emotional pain every minute of every day making sure she she got the best care possible. 2013-01-22 13.15.36

He is an amazing man and an even more amazing husband.

We were lucky enough to be able to visit her in the rehab center as friends and roommates a few times. I know there were many 2013-01-31 13.36.36more friends who would have visited if they could have.  We felt so lucky to be able to have this time to be with her and help her even in a small way.

In just a few short weeks she took big strides in re-gaining strength and memory.  And then today…She went home.

So today is a GLORIOUS day!  So if you see me out today and I’m waiving ribbons and flags praising Jesus and God, you’ll know why.

I thought I’d share this video.  This is my favorite Christian song and it’s my anthem today.
If you’re reading this and have been touched by this miracle, I ask for your continued prayers for Angela. Her family’s life will never be the same without her son and I can only imagine that the grief is just beginning now that she’s home. Pray for her comfort as she mourns and increased strength as her body continues to heal.

I also wanted to share this article from The Friend Magazine that especially touched me and helped me to accept that God has a plan for each of his children.

How To Be Happier

A friend of mine showed me this infographic. I can attest to the truthfulness of it’s claims.  I might not be the happiest person in the whole world, but I do make an effort to be happy.  In my opinion, happiness isn’t something that you are, it’s something that you do.

I love the list associated with the graphic.  It give you 10 things to think about and focus on in order to create more happiness for yourself. When I am practicing more of these keys, I am a happier person.  I only wish it had 11 keys.  The 11th would be to make an effort have regular amounts of fun.

Packing for Maui

If I haven’t mentioned it before, I love vacations.  I live for vacationing especially in the winter, more especially if that vacation is to Maui.  We’ve been three times in the last six years and wish we were going THIS year.  But we’re not (sad face).

Since were NOT going, I thought I’d share some packing tips for those of you who ARE going.  We’ve had lots of experience bringing the wrong things.  Our first trip we were fooled by the forecast which predicted 75 degree weather.  Be aware 75 degrees in Hawaii feels like 95 degrees.  We brought clothes appropriate for 75.  We were roasting hot!Hopefully this will help you pack the RIGHT things.

Feel free to add your best packing tips in the comments section if you have experience vacationing in the tropics. What can’t you live with out.

The key phrase when packing for Maui is less is more. Seriously, pack as little as possible in to your suitcase, and then eliminate half of what is in your bag.

Maui is one of my favorite vacations destinations in the whole world.  The last thing you want to be doing while you’re there is digging through your luggage looking for something.

Make your goal to pack suitcases that are nearly empty. This will give you the chance to bring home whatever you like. We always fill our space with delicious Hawaiian Pineapple, Coconut syrup, Island lotions and potions to smell Islandy on the way home and trinkets for friends as well as new Hawaiian clothing. We’re always glad we came with so much room.

Here are the Maui essentials you DO need to pack:

Men: Lightweight shirts, linen is great. If you have it, bring it. Also Hawaiian shirts.  What Men should pack for HawaiiSeriously, everyone wears them, even the newscasters on the local Hawaiian news. If you’re not wearing a Hawaiian shirt you’ll stick out.

I’d plan on taking several swimsuits.  I’d advise taking at least two board short type suits, and a more snug-fitting suit if you can stand the thought. I’m not saying you have to go right to a Speedo, but there are a lot of options in Men’s swimwear if you’re looking around. Here’s some great low-price options from SwimOutlet.com if you’re looking for a place to start. If you’re doing Hawaii right, you’ll be spending a lot of time in the water snorkeling.  Loose fitting suits tend to fill with water and create a lot of drag moving through the water. You’ll thank me if you have at least ONE suit where you can really move through the water without fear that your suit will fall off.

If you don’t have much “Hawaiian Friendly” clothing, don’t worry about it.  Once you get to the island plan on making a quick stop at any store and pick up a few things. They have K-Mart, Wal-Mart and about a billion beach-wear stores on almost every corner.

Women:

Don’t waste your time packing lots and lots of outfits. I certainly NEVER wear pants and rarely even want to put on shorts. It’s just too hot and humid! My favorite thing to wear are thin little dresses or skirts with loose fitting tops. If you pack two nice looking outfits, you’ll be good to go.

The most important item to make sure you have several of is swimsuits.  I like to have at least three.  One that works well for snorkeling. Your snorkel suit should be tight fitting especially on your chest. You don’t want one that lets in a bunch of water.  You’ll feel like a human parachute dragging through the water.

My preference is to wear a one-piece suit while snorkeling.  My favorite place to get great swim suits is Lands’ End. They have the best variety in style and sizing. Plus their quality is amazing.  I’ve been swimming laps twice a week for two years in the same suit and it’s still in great shape.

You’ll want a suit that looks great lounging at the pool and on the beach.  You might also want a two-piece suit that transitions well when going from island adventure to adventure.  Lands’ End specializes in these kinds of suits.

I also couldn’t live without a great sarong or two on a trip to Hawaii.  They’re perfect for covering up your swimsuit walking to and from the beach as well as covering up at the beach when you’re worried about getting too much sun.  If you don’t have one, just buy on when you get there.  We love the ABC stores there’s one in every town almost on every corner.

What should I pack for kids in hawaii

Girls: I like to pack 2-3 dress cute Hawaiian dresses for my girls.  If you can’t find them where you’re at, don’t sweat it.  They’ll have a billion cute girly dresses at almost every store in Hawaii.  I wouldn’t even bother packing any shorts or pants for them, it’ll be to hot and sweaty for pants.

Boys:Unfortunately most boys won’t want to wear dresses. Just do your best to bring light weight fabric shorts and the thinnest T-shirts you can find.  Just a very few will be fine.  If you end up needing more clothing you can always pick up something there.

Other essential items are as follows:What kind of shoes should I bring to Maui Hawaii

Water-Friendly Shoes: Don’t bother bringing any shoes that can’t get wet or sandy.  This is the ultimate flip-flop location.  You may also want to bring some kind of water shoes you can wear on lava rock in and out of the water. I also love wearing my Teva’s.  Hubby likes his KEENS.

Hats: You won’t make it very long in the Hawaiian Sun without a hat.  Bring your favorite hat for every member of your family.

How many swim suits should I bring to Maui HawaiiCamera: In addition to your iPhone or Android you might also consider buying a waterproof camera.  We bought the Kodak easyshare sport for our seven-year-old daughter and ended up using it almost the whole time.  You can throw it in your beach bag without a case and take it everywhere you go, including underwater. It’s waterproof AND sand proof.  We loved not having to worry about ruining our nice camera and the photos and videos we got were super.

Self tanner: If you’re coming from a wintery place, you may want to pick up a can of tan.  I like Sublime Bronze from L’OREAL for my face and almost everything above the waist.   It has a very fine micro mist and wide angle applicator.  I always get perfect results.

Below the waste I prefer to use a cream.  The mist can get drippy looking on the legs for whatever reason.  My favorite self-tan cream is Jergens Natural glow.  I’m of Scandinavian heritage and buy the fair-to medium tones version.  After three applications of the lotion, I look like I’ve been living the island life for years.

Trip journal: If you’re not bringing a laptop or tablet with a keyboard, be sure to pick up a little journal you can write down your day’s adventures in.  It’s a shame to pay for an entire vacation and not be able to recount what happened by the time the day is over.

We always take turns passing around the trip journal at meal time letting each member of the party record highlights about what happened during the day.

Hope you’ve found this little list helpful in planning your trip to Maui.  If you have any specific questions I’m always ready to talk Island. Contact me here!

Learn to Ski Month–Canyons Ski School

When is the right age to learn to ski? If you haven’t already heard,  January is Learn to Ski and Snowboard month in Utah.

If you click through this link, you’ll see the incredible ski deals for locals who are new to skiing. This post is dedicated to the adventure my cute little kiddies had taking advantage of an awesome deal offered by Canyons resort.

This deal is for brand new skiers of any age (4 and up).  They offered rentals, an all-day lesson and lunch for $39. Anyone familiar with skiing at all will know what kind of INCREDIBLE value this is.  Any other time this package would probably cost hundreds of dollars.

I wrote an article for the Deseret News this week about how it’s never to late to learn to ski.  In it I confess that my husband and I are absolute ski junkies who frequent Alta’s Ski after 3 program.  We’ve wanted our kids to learn to ski so they can come with us.

I found these cute Bolle helmets and matching goggles at Costco on clearance the day before their lesson.2013-01-11 13.41.502013-01-11 13.45.37  They were both THRILLED to have them.  They’re the same brand helmet my husband and I love to use.

With new helmets and kids in tow, we set off early on a seriously FREEZING, snowy Saturday morning.  We doubled up riding with our cute neighbors who had a 4-wheel drive vehicle. We also met some other friends at the resort.  Everything is funner with friends.

We arrived a few minutes early for our 8:15 drop off time.  2013-01-12 08.05.31Canyons has a fun open-air gondola to ride from the parking lot up to the resort base. 2013-01-12 15.50.02

After the nice Canyons gentleman outfitted the girls with their rentals and we took them to their appointed areas.  They couldn’t have been more excited!

Even Sunny was thrilled.  She had been nervous about it all week, but after being outfitted with her very own helmet, she was ready and willing!

I was surprised at how seamless the drop off went.  2013-01-12 08.47.50They literally had and army of ski instructors ready to take the parental reigns. 2013-01-12 08.48.36There were no crying kids anywhere to be found, just happy kids shuffling off together into ski school.

I was especially nervous about dropping off Sunny, but she had no problem leaving me. 2013-01-12 15.15.34 She waved good-bye and went off with one of the instructors who gave me instructions to pick her up at 3:30 that afternoon.  I was worried.  That seemed like such a long time for my 4-year-old to be doing any one thing, let alone learning to ski in 5 degree weather.

We only caught one glimpse of the kids all-day as they boarded the gondola to take them up the mountain. 2013-01-12 09.23.16I thought we’d see them for lunch, but the ski school fed the kids lunch and a snack during the day. 2013-01-12 09.15.42We felt a little like chumps not bringing our skis.  We spent a very un-adventourous day at the Tanger Outlets shopping and taking a very long lunch which was actually nice except it was so FREEZING.

At the end of the day, we finally spotted the kids coming off the upper mountain gondola.  They looked like they were in good spirits.  Sunny walked up to me and stared at me silently for about five seconds before excitedly blurting out… “I LOVED IT!”  2013-01-12 15.09.37I was so thrilled and scooped her up and gave her a big hug.  Then she uttered her next phrase. “But I really, really, really missed you.”  She delivered the exact two things I wanted to hear. Good girl.

Alyssa and her friends had a great time too and LOVED Canyons Ski School. 2013-01-12 15.30.29 I felt pretty good about their progress when the instructor told me they were almost Lift ready.

As an admitted helicopter parent, I was frustrated by the fact that I couldn’t see the kids in action so I made them demo their newly acquired ski skill for me at the end of the day. I understand that their skill-set is more advanced than this video shows, but it’s all I got.

I must say, I am almost more impressed at the way they are able to walk up the hill then the way they come down.

In all, Canyons ski school gets 4 stars from this Adventure Mom. 2013-01-12 15.37.57Exhausted by the end of the day, all these girls had a great time and can now call themselves skiers!

I also posted about this fun adventure as a special correspondent with AdventureMomTV.  If you haven’t seen the AdventrueMomTV site yet, check it out or find them on facebook you’ll love it.

I’ve been REVIV-ed #314

Monday I posted about doing something scary. What was the scary thing? Answer: Getting Botoxed!

You’ll notice in the photo to the left, the crazy number 11 lines in between my eyebrows. I call them my grouchy lady lines. I see them in every photo and every time I look in the mirror.

For the last few years, I’ve noticed that they’re leaving permanent wrinkles on my skin whether I am scowling or not.  This is not okay with me! I don’t wish to look grouchy all the time as I am a happy lady.

Enter Reviv Medical SpaWhat does Botox feel like? They contacted me several months ago about trading some services for a blog post.  I happy accepted their offer.

They’re brand new in Herriman and just started seeing patients last week. Their grand opening party is Friday January 25th from 10am-2pm.  They’re offering some KILLER deals for new clients.

For 4-hours-only they’re offering some unheard of deals on some very popular spa treatments and products.  Check out their Facebook page to see all the special offers.

In January, they’re offering a FREE laser hair removal treatment.  Seriously…Free. You should know that it takes more than one treatment to be completely get rid of unwanted hair, but this is a great way to check out laser hair removal and see how it would work on you. If you like it, they’ll be offering half-price Laser Hair removal packages during the Grand Opening Event!

Does Botox hurt?As part of my complimentary package I received a very relaxing facial before the Botox.  The whole experience was a little out of this world.

As I walked in, they warmly greeted me.  I sipped my complementary chilled bottle of water as I filled out my relevant medical history.

What is it like to get botox?Once that was done, they gave me a little tour of their elegantly decorated facility.  Their staff was just as impressive as the interior decorating.

Then it was facial time, my first ever.  All my worries were wiped away after I found myself between the warmed sheets on the clinician’s table. Just climbing into a warm bed was a highlight on a day when the high was 10 degrees.

How fast does Botox work? The relaxing music and mood lighting prompted quick and ultimate relaxation as the esthetician pampered my face, neck, shoulders, scalp and lower legs with a massage using lotions and potions that made me feel…well…REVIV-ed. 2013-01-14 09.52.32My favorite part must have been having my feet wrapped in hot damp towels.

After the facial, it was Botox time.

I won’t lie.  I was super nervous.  After filling out the medical history and reading about the possible side effects, I was even more scared.  There were some pretty sick side effects listed on the sheet.

The clinician, Kelly, a Nurse Practitioner, reassured me by explaining the product and risks a little more. 2013-01-14 10.34.55 After her consultation, I felt reassured and ready.

She gave me four of the tiniest pokes ever and injected 25 units of Botox.  2013-01-14 10.34.40The procedure, if you can call it that, lasted about 30 seconds. It really didn’t hurt at all.

I don’t have a great “after” photo, because it takes the Botox between 7-14 days to become fully effective.

If you have wrinkles that worry you and you’re in a place where you can SPLURGE on yourself a little, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Reviv Botox treatment.  You can count it as #314 on our Pleasant Event list.

AUTHORS NOTE: As instructed, I came in the spa with NO make-up on.  Please note as I post these pictures, this was very hard for me.  I like to wear make-up and I DON’T like showing myself with out it. As a part of my Scandinavian heritage, I was blessed with blonde eyelashes.  Without  mascara I look like I had an accident lighting my BBQ grill and it singed off all my lashes.  They’re there I promise. Really!

Something Scary

This is a photo my husband took on our trip to Maui last winter.  I love being in Hawaii, especially this time of year.  It really is as great as everyone says it is.  Anyway…My guy took this photo and I can’t really remember what led up to it, but… Here I am truly terrified letting a tiny hermit crab crawl across my palm. I am terrified of spiders and this little guy looked and felt exactly like what I imagine a spider would feel like on me.  I was scared.

This photo is both a good demonstration of what I feel like TODAY and a clue as to the scary thing I’m doing  TODAY.

I’m something I’ve thought about for years but never taken the opportunity or the guts to try.  I’m not sure how it will turn out or what it will be like once it’s done.

I’m an optimistic person and I imagine I will be very happy with the results or I wouldn’t even bother to try.  But…it’s frightening to me.  Very frightening.

Doing scary things is an exciting thing to do.  Anticipating something scary has kept me very interested in my calendar for the last several weeks.  I’ve been looking forward to this day with butterflies in my tummy.

What scary things have you done?  How did it turn out for you? What scary things would you like to try?

Doing scary things are a great way to break up the winter blues and have some fun.  Sometimes all you need is something to look forward to.  Doing things that scare you stretch you and enable you to accomplish unreached high-points in your life.

I’m not sure what I’m up to today will qualify as an important thing in my life or help me to reach any goal, but still…it scares me.

Wish me luck.  I’ll share the results from my scary thing on Wednesday.

RandMOM Act of Kindness

2013-01-09 16.34.12So I was out shopping a few days ago with my mom when we had a very touching experience and made a new friend.

Earlier this week I was returning a pair of pajama pants my mom had bought for Steve.  He needed a different size and I also wanted to see if they had another jacket like the one my mom had given me for Christmas.  I LOVE it and have been wearing it every day since I got it.

It’s a coral colored pink, my favorite color.  I wanted to see if they had a aqua colored one, my other favorite color.

As I stepped up to the register to make the return on the pajama pants I noticed the person before me had returned something that was a beautiful aqua blue color.  I asked the cashier if I could see it.  Sure enough, it was the same jacket I had and wanted to buy. It was even the right size and the right color and there wasn’t another one like it left in the store.

I was so thrilled and took it to mean that the Universe was very happy with me today, because besides that, I had several bits of good news that day.  I took the jacket and went into the store to find another size pajama pants for Steve.

We quickly found what we were looking for and since we didn’t have much time, we hurried back toward the register. As we stood in a very short line, the woman behind us noticed my mom’s scarf.  My mom’s scarf is beautiful.

It was made my a lady she’s helping on her LDS inner-city service mission.  She’s a single mother from Peru. She has two children and is suffering from stage 4 Breast cancer along, with bone and liver cancer.  Since her English is poor, my parents are seeing that she gets the medical attention she needs in a timely manner.

As a thank you for my mom and dad’s help, she made this beautiful scarf for my mom.  I’ve never seen so much detailed workmanship.  It’s absolutely beautiful.  My mom loved it so much, that she hired this little lady to make one for  me and my five sisters-in-law for Christmas.  Every time I wear mine, I get lots of comments.

Anyway…as we were standing in this little line at JCPenney the woman behind us leaned over and commented to my mom about how much she loved the scarf.  The cashier overheard and said how she had been admiring it too.

The women asked my mom if she’d made it and she explained she’d gotten it from a friend who had cancer. The woman behind us leaned in to my mom and told her she’d just come from her MD’s office and had just gotten a diagnosis of breast cancer and she’d be having surgery this Monday and she’d start radiation after that.

We were all a little stunned.  I’m not sure what she was doing at JCPenney, but I guess a little retail therapy was her first line of defense by distraction.  I don’t know.

My mom leaned in and gave her a big hug and told her she was going to be alright. The woman hugged her back and said.  “I know, we’re going to fight it.”

We finished our purchase and headed out to the car.  As I buckled my seat belt, my mom said.  “I need to go give her my scarf!” I looked at her puzzled.  We were already in the car.  I told her, “you don’t need to do that, she probably won’t even take it from you.”

She returned my comment with, “but I can get another one and she needs to know, especially today, that people love and care about her. She just found out today that she has cancer.”

So mom hopped out of my car and went back into the store only to come out quickly.  “She’s gone,” she said as she got back into my van.  I said, “wouldn’t I have seen her come out of the store? I bet she’s still in there shopping.”

Random act of kindessSo my mom hopped back out and went into the store.  I went and re-parked my van. I knew my mom would find the woman this time.  And she did. I got there just in time to snap this photo.  My mom took her scarf and laid it around the neck of this woman and told her this.

“I just want you to know that people love you and care about you and that Heavenly Father is aware of you and will take care of you and your family.”

The woman, my mom and me were all in tears.  She said this to my mom. “You’ve touched my life forever. This is so kind. I’ll remember this for the rest of my life.”  She also told my mom she didn’t need to do this, but that she LOVED the scarf and would cherish it always.

It was a very touching experience to be a part of.  My mother continues to teach me the importance of loving one another and loving your neighbor as yourself.  I was so glad to have shared this experience with my mom.

We wish this woman all the best in her fight with breast cancer.
